Win the battle against bugs at your next picnic

(DayTripper) – As the warm summer months arrive, picnics become a popular outdoor activity for families and friends. However, these gatherings often attract uninvited guests in the form of pesky insects. Here are some effective strategies to keep bugs at bay, ensuring a pleasant and bug-free picnic experience.

1. Choose the right location.

Selecting an appropriate picnic spot is the first line of defense against bugs. Opt for open, breezy areas that are less likely to harbor insects. Avoid setting up near stagnant water or dense vegetation, as these environments tend to attract mosquitoes and other pests. Also, utilizing picnic tables can help mitigate the chance of setting up near or on an ant colony.

2. Use natural repellents.

Incorporate natural insect repellents into your picnic setup. Citronella candles, for example, emit a scent that deters mosquitoes. Placing a few of these candles around your picnic area can help keep bugs at a distance. However, be cautious of the candle’s placement to ensure maximum safety. Additionally, consider using a natural bug spray made from essential oils like lemon eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint to keep insects from landing on you and your guests.

3. Cover your food.
Keep your food covered whenever possible to prevent insects from coming into contact with it. Use mesh food domes, plastic wrap, or aluminum foil to protect your dishes. Be sure to promptly store leftovers in airtight containers to minimize the chances of attracting bugs. Mesh tents are also an excellent option.

4. Dress appropriately.
Wearing light-colored clothing and long sleeves can help deter bugs from landing on you. Insects are generally attracted to dark colors and can more easily spot them. Additionally, tucking your pants into your socks and wearing a hat can provide extra protection against bugs.

5. Clean up promptly.
After enjoying your picnic, clean up the area as soon as possible. Dispose of all trash in sealed bags and remove any food remnants from the site. Leaving food and garbage behind can attract bugs and other wildlife, so it’s essential to leave the area as clean as you found it.

6. Use a fan.
A portable, battery-operated fan can be a useful tool in keeping bugs at bay. The airflow generated by the fan can help deter flying insects from approaching your picnic area. Position the fan near your food and seating area for maximum effectiveness.

By implementing these simple strategies, you can enjoy a bug-free picnic and focus on making lasting memories with your loved ones. So, pack your favorite foods, grab a blanket, and head out to your favorite picnic spot, knowing that you’re well-prepared to combat any pesky insects that may try to join the party.
