The State Fair of West Virginia has compiled its Top 10 things to do at the fair this August, and we couldn’t agree more.
Here’s what they said:
1. Fair Food: tagging the fair the “West Virginia Fried Food Capital,” the fair boasts everything you can imagine, battered and tossed in a deep fryer. They highlight two vendors who have been at the fair since the 1950s: Ben Ellen donuts and Trudy’s Dairy World.
2. Carnival rides: No doubt! The state fair’s decades-long partnership with Reithoffer continues again this year on the midway with fun for tots and teens alike.
3. Concerts: Grandstand concerts are a guaranteed good time, with many Greats gracing the stage from Johnny Cash, John Denver and Dolly Parton to Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, and ZZ Top.
4. Free fun and entertainment: the fairgrounds are rich with free entertainment for all ages. You can find shade and a free seat under the Center Stage with shows throughout the day. There is also no shortage of people watching and new-tractor gawking for young and old alike.
5. Livestock shows: for many area youth, the livestock shows are the highlight of their year when they and their families get to display pigs, sheep, cattle, horses and rabbits. Each animal will compete to win the blue ribbon in the Tractor Supply Small Stock Arena or the Large Stock Arena.
6. Dairy Birthing Center: This amazing feature of the fair brings 20 pregnant cows to the Farm Credit Dairy Birthing Center each year. Your chances of catching a live birth are great. A PA announcer keeps the fairgrounds updated so you can be there to witness the miracle of birth. The new calves will be available for pictures and petting as well.
7. New Fair Food Contest: Here is your chance to eat for the cause! Vendors will compete for the title of “Best New Fair Food.” Try them all and vote for your favorite.
8. Heritage Corner: Farm to Food Pavilion – Teach your children the basics of agriculture in a fun way. Find shade and unique activities for children to teach and promote agriculture. The fair will feature iPads and technology to enhance the educational experience.
Corn Maze – They will have a mini corn maze for mini fair goers to try.
9. Horse Fun: Check out the one-of-a-kind Draft Horse Pull on Friday, August 19, at 9 a.m. where teams of horses will pull a minimum of 3,000lbs. This unique event is not to be missed.
10. Make Memories: Enjoy logging off and putting the phone down. Cherish time with your family that is distraction, text and Wi-Fi free.
