A Perfect Pit Stop: A Day Trip to Hinton on Your Way to Sandstone Falls

A journey to the majestic Sandstone Falls is a quintessential Southern West Virginia experience, but the trip is even better with a perfect pit stop along the way. Just a short drive from the falls, the historic town of Hinton offers a charming break from the road and a chance to explore a community rich in history and hospitality.

Hinton serves as the gateway to the southern end of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. It’s a town where the New River, Greenbrier River, and Bluestone River converge, providing a scenic backdrop to its classic Main Street.

While passing through, a stroll through downtown Hinton is a must. The town’s architecture tells the story of its railroad heyday, with beautifully preserved buildings that now house local shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s the ideal place to grab a coffee, a quick bite to eat, or a souvenir before continuing your adventure to the falls.

A conversation with a local highlighted the town’s welcoming spirit. “Hinton is more than just a stop on the map; it’s a community with a big heart,” they said. “Visitors are always surprised by how much there is to see and do here. We’ve got the historic Railroad Depot, the beautiful Hinton Railroad Museum, and of course, our proximity to Bluestone State Park and the New River itself.”

The Hinton Hardware Co., a staple of the town’s Main Street, is a great place to stop and pick up any last-minute essentials you might need for your waterfall excursion. And if you’re lucky enough to be in town on a Saturday, the Hinton Farmer’s Market is a wonderful place to pick up fresh, local snacks for your picnic.

So, as you plan your trip to witness the breathtaking cascade of Sandstone Falls, remember to set aside some time to experience the small-town charm of Hinton. It’s the perfect prologue to your day of natural wonder, proving that the journey can be just as memorable as the destination.
